Pros and Cons of Cast Iron Pans

A cast-iron pan is an iconic piece of kitchen cookware. But like all materials, it has its pros and cons that you must take into account while making a purchase. Let us learn what cast iron pans entail:

Pros:

  • Cast iron pans are extremely durable
  • Cast iron pans can be inexpensive
  • Cast iron pans retain heat well compared to other materials
  • When seasoned and cared for, cast iron pans will develop a non-stick coating that prevents most foods from sticking

Cons:

  • Cast iron retains heat well, but it is not as good as conducting heat
  • Cast iron pans are heavy
  • The handles on a cast iron pan can get very hot
  • For your pan to become non-stick, you need to help it build up a layer of seasoning.

How to Season a Cast Iron Pan

A cast-iron pan is seasoned when a layer of oil on the pan is heated past its smoking point and carbonates, also known as the polymerisation process. If your pan looks rusty, dull, or worse for wear, grab a scrubby pad, a little soap, some oil, and paper towels, and follow these simple steps to give it a fresh coat of seasoning for a flawless cooking surface.

  1. Give your pan a quick soak in mildly soapy hot water. Next, use an abrasive scrubby pad or brush to remove all unwanted particles until the surface is smooth and free of unevenness or sticky gunk.
  2. Wipe your pan with a paper towel and set it on the stove over medium heat until all moisture has evaporated.
  3. Drop one teaspoon of oil into the pan and use a paper towel to rub it evenly across the entire pan. Keep rubbing and buffing the oil into the pan until it no longer looks greasy.
  4. Preheat your oven to at least 450°F before sliding your pan in. Let your pan bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, then turn off the oven and let your pan remain in the oven for another 15 minutes without opening the door.
  5. Carefully remove your pan with thick oven mitts and let it cool completely.
